Shri A. CharlesShri. A. Charles Passes Away

Shri. A. Charles, former Member of Parliament (MP) from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) passed away on 26.10.2014 at 9.45 AM. He was 84 years old. The funeral has been conducted today (27.10.2014) at 11.00 AM at CSI Cemetery, Kannammoola. Rt. Rev. A. Dharmaraj Rassalam (Bishop, CSI, South Kerala Diocese) and Most Rev. J.W. Gladstone (Former Moderator, CSI) have led the funeral services. The funeral was attended by a huge crowd representing all walks of life.


Shri. A. Charles, born in November 1930 at Kanjiramkulam earned his BA Degree from the University College, Trivandrum and BL from Govt Law College, Trivandrum. He was employed in the Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) and became an Under Secretary there.


Meanwhile, Shri. Charles became the Secretary to CSI, South Kerala Diocese (SKD). Christian College, Kattakada was established (1965), when he was the Secretary of SKD. He visited Shri. K. Karunakaran, the then Chief Minister of Kerala, for presenting various issues related to the SKD and the community. This earned him the goodwill of the Chief Minister and he was appointed a member of  the KPSC, which is a Constitutional post. As per the directions of Shri. K. Karunakaran, he contested the elections to the Loksabha (the Lower House of Indian Parliament) in 1984 under the ticket of Indian National Congress. He won the election with a handsome majority. Also, he retained the seat in 1989 and 1991 elections. He is the first person to win a second term from the capital city of Kerala and the only person so far to have won a hat-trick there.


A soft-spoken politician, Shri. Charles will ever be remembered for the honesty and impartiality he professed during his career. CSI kattakada pays our homage to the departed leader. May his soul rest in peace.
