The occasion also marked the 5th anniversary of the Palliative Care Unit in our parish. This unit-the first ever in a parish under the SKD- was inaugurated in November 2009, when Rev. Sathyadas Prasad was the Presbyter and Rev. S.K. Shaji John was the Associate Vicar. Approximately 100 people and their families receive aid from this unit. At present, approximately 200 such units work in the parish levels under the SKD.
During the Sunday Service in the morning, Rev. T.F. Justin Kumar (Co-ordinator, Palliative Care, SKD) addressed the gathering and explained the activities of the Palliative Care initiative under the SKD. He has pointed out that the SKD was the first organization in Kerala to come forward with a Palliative Care initiative. The Hospis Palliative Care Clinic in Attingal was inaugurated in 2000 when Most Rev. JW Gladstone was the Bishop of SKD, under the leadership of Rev. JD Solomon. Palliative care policy has been adopted by the Kerala Government also and the same is at present being implemented by the Local Self Government Institutions. At present, a total of 10,000 people affected with chronic diseases receive care, relief, aid, medicine, treatment and support through various initiatives under SKD.
